John Shrum Memorial Chris Greene Lake Cable Swim

Charlottesville, Virginia Saturday, June 3, 2023

The 2023 John Shrum Memorial Chris Greene Lake Cable Swim is in the books. It was a big hit. A lovely day greeted us in the early hours of pristine Chris Greene Lake and the one-mile swim, two counterclockwise laps on our certified 1/4 mile course went smoothly with swimmers setting 3 new age group records on this flat and fast course including women’s 55-59, Deborah Dawson, 22:12, women’s 70-74, Shirley Loftus-Charley, 24:56 and men’s 30-34 Anton Janezich, 19:09.

Then the main event, the USMS 2-mile National Championship, four clockwise laps around the aforementioned surveyed 1/4 mile course also saw 3 new age group records set including women’s 70-74, Shirley Loftus-Charley, 50:14, women’s 75-79, Joanne Menard, 1:02:25, and Men’s 75-79, Dan Kirkland, 50:05.

Each year things get a little smoother, the t-shirts a little prettier, and we’re looking forward to the 2024 race eagerly. If you’ve never done a cable swim this is the one for you. Rather than swimming from point to point or circumferentially around a lake where the distance might be not totally clear, this course is exactly 440 yards long and each swimmer can see his or her precise pace at this distance. Good to know for sure.

What is a cable swim?

USMS rules tell us that cable swims are open water swims done on a specially designed one-quarter mile straightaway course defined by a cable including frequent buoys.
